Uno dei molti motivi è che non ci sono grosse imprese che ci guadagnino, interessate a sperimentare e diffondere questo hobby. Nel tempo qualcuno ci ha provato, con scarsi riultati. Uno dei più antichi tentativi l’ho scoperto nel più vecchio libro di cesteria che abbia tenuto in mano.
Si tratta di un opuscolo pubblicato nel 1922 da una storica casa produttrice di cartoleria: la Dennison Manufactoring Co. (ora confluita nella Avery, quella delle etichette). Il testo insegna come fare cesti con la “paper rope” ossia la corda di carta crespa ritorta, un materiale simile alle odierne “cannucce di carta” ma ovviamente molto più resistente e di lunghezza potenzialmente infinita (quindi non bisogna fermarsi sempre per aggiungere materiale). La corda oltre ad essere producibile e trasportabile in maniera più efficente, ha spessore, lunghezza e peso standardizzabili. Questo aiuta molto sia nella progettazione dei cesti, sia nell’esecuzione.
Il libretto infatti contiene spiegazioni delle tecniche e schemi per cesti con indicazione precisa dei materiali occorrenti. Pare scritto da qualcuno che effettivamente ci ha lavorato su e sperimentato potenzialità e problemi di questa strategia, tra l’altro proponendo il fil di ferro per le armature dell’intreccio e approfondendo la possibilità di creare forme geometriche nella base e nei manici. Dalle foto il risultato è piuttosto curioso perchè si ottiene un misto tra la cesteria ad intreccio di salice e quella cucita a spirale. Il problema è che si usano tecniche del primo tipo, su un materiale molto più simile a quelli usati nel secondo (fasci di erbe, arbusti e simili). Di conseguenza oltre a non essere poi così pratico aver a che fare con rotoli di corda che si accavallano fra loro, il risultato non è molto resistente. Infatti i cesti proposti sono solo femminilissimi contenitori decorativi e lampade.

How come basketry struggling to take off among the “creative” activities that periodically give the change in the fashions of do-it-yourself? One of the many reasons is that there are no big companies interested in experimenting and spreading this hobby. Over time someone tried, with poor results. One of the oldest attempts I discovered in the oldest book of basketry that he held in his hand.
It is a booklet published in 1922 by a historic stationery manufacturer: the Dennison Manufactoring Co. (now merged into Avery, that of labels). The text teaches how to make baskets with the crepe “paper rope” twisted, a material similar to today’s “paper straws” but obviously much more durable and of potentially infinite length (so you do not have to stop always to add material). The rope, in addition to being producible and transportable in a more efficient manner, has standard thickness, length and weight. This helps a lot both in the design of the baskets and in the execution.
The booklet in fact contains explanations of the techniques and patterns for baskets with precise indication of the materials required. It seems written by someone who actually worked on it and experimented with potentials and problems of this strategy, among other things proposing the iron wire for the skeleton of the weaving and deepening the possibility of creating geometric shapes in the base and in the handles. From the photos the result is rather curious because you get a mixture between the weaving with willow and the one sewed in a spiral. The problem is that we use techniques of the first type, on a material much more similar to those used in the second (bundles of herbs, shrubs and the like). Consequently, besides not being so practical to deal with rolls of rope that overlap each other, the result is not very resistant. In fact, the proposed baskets are only very feminine decorative containers and lamps.

Basketry is one of the most fascinating of crafts. The possibility of creaing an endless variety of baskets in every shape and size makes the work unusually attractive.
Weaving with crepe paper rope and wire is not difficult, as the wire is easily bent into the desired shape, and the rope is soft and pliable. Most of the weavers and stitches done with other materials may also be used for crepe paper rope weaving.
The instructions given in this book will be found helpful for making a variety of baskets, vases, trays and lamps. Further information with sketches and directions for making other articles may be obtained by writing to any of the Service Bureaus wich are maintained at all the Dennison stores.
