Si tratta di una serie di opuscoli anni ’50/’60, pubblicati dalla “Atlas“: una azienda inglese di vendita materiali per hobbistica. Si tratta di una costola (non più esistente) della Fred Aldous, nata guardacaso come importatore di materiali per cesteria. Di questi opuscoli io ne ho 8 ma ma ve ne sono diversi che riguardano la cesteria e tecniche affini (impagliatura sedie, trecce di paglia, rafia…). Sono fatti bene: in 15/20 pagine con poche ma rapide spiegazioni propongono progetti semplici e d’effetto, anche se un pò demodé (abatjour, portavasi da appendere…).

Ma aldilà di questo la cosa interessante è come l’azienda abbia tentato di produrre e commercializzare materiali adatti per diffondere un hobby particolare come la cesteria, cosa che per altre attività è stato fatto con successo (vedi uncinetto e paste polimeriche). Questa Atlas, commercializzava materiali “pronti” e già divisi per calibro, come il midollino (il più adatto ai principianti), le basi in compensato forate, il “Raffene” (che credo fosse il nome commerciale della rafia sintetica). Queste cose esistono ancora, ma l’azienda ideò anche una serie di semilavorati che a a quanto pare non sono più in produzione: il “Fabricane” (fabric+cane, ossia bastoncini di midollino cuciti assieme per fare una sorta di stoffa/stuoia), il “Dualso” (basi di legno con fori per inseririe i midollini con diverse angolazioni) e il “Dualso tubing” (tubicini di plastica colorati da usare al posto del midollino) e i “Duobase” (coppie di basi in compensato di cui la seconda vuota all’interno, che fa da guida per la sagomatura del cesto).

A ben guardare sono tutti mezzi per togliere alla cesteria le difficoltà non solo relative ai materiali (procurare, pulire, suddividere, tagliare, conservare…) ma anche della procedura (sostituire un bastone quando finisce, dare forma, essere regolari, metterci tempo..). In effetti la cosa sfocia presto nell’evitare il più possibile la fase dell’intreccio, che dovrebbe essere quello che caratterizza appunto la cesteria…. Mi chiedo se questo esperimento è fallito nonostante questo, o a causa di questo… In ogni caso in fondo è un peccato.

This is a series of booklets from the 50s / 60s, published by “Atlas“: an English company selling hobby materials. It is a rib (no longer existing) of the Fred Aldous, born just importer of basketry materials. I have 7 of these pamphlets, but there are many concerning basketry and related techniques (seating, straw plaits, raffia…). They are well done: in 15/20 pages with few but good explanations they propose simple and effective projects, even if a bit out of fashion (lampshades, hanging baskets pot-holders …).

But beyond this, it is interesting that the company has tried to produce and market materials to spread a particular hobby such as basketry, what for other activities has been done successfully (see crochet and polymer clay). This Atlas, marketed “ready” materials already divided by caliber, such as cane (the most suitable for beginners), plywood bases, “Raffene” (which I believe is the commercial name of synthetic raffia). These things still exist, the company also designed a series of semi-finished products that apparently are no longer in production: the “Fabricane” (fabric + cane, or wicker sticks sewn together to make a sort of fabric / mat), the “Dualso” (wooden bases for insertion the wickers with different angles) and the “Dualso tubing” (colored plastic tubes to use instead of the wicker) and the “Duobase” (pairs of playwood bases of which the second vacuum inside, which acts as a guide for shaping of the basket).

On closer inspection, they are all means of removing from the basketry the difficulties not only related to materials (procuring, cleaning, subdividing, cutting, preserving …) but also of the procedure (replacing a cane when it ends, shaping, being regular, putting in time ..). In fact, it soon results in avoiding as much as possible the phase of the weaving, which should be what characterizes the basketry … I wonder if this experiment failed despite this, or because of this … In every case, what a pity!
