Intrecci, il mobile in vimini italiano (De Guttry, Maino)

Il libro contiene una introduzione storica sui mobili intrecciati, in generale (Europa e Asia) e in Italia in particolare, tra la fine dell’800 e la prima metà del ‘900. Una sezione di una cinquantina di tavole a colori che riproducono mobili da collezioni private e una sezione con un elenco dei produttori antichi ricavati da fonti d’archivio e riproduzioni di targhette identificative e cataloghi. Sono approfonditi in particolare le aziende più importanti (Bonacina, Crenna, Dal Vera, Gervasoni), alcune delle quali ancora attive (purtroppo poche).

Mi sembra un libro magari non completissimo ma d’avanguardia visto che si tratta dell’unico in Italia su questo argomento. Le autrici sono esperte di antiquariato e design del 900, anzi direi della prima parte del 900, e hanno fondato gli Archivi delle Arti Applicate Italiane del XX secolo. In realtà uno dei difetti del libro è che non tratta della seconda metà del secolo, quando il design italiano (anche nel campo dell’intreccio) emerge a livello mondiale. Gioco forza è un pò ripetitivo quando riporta nelle varie parti del libro i confronti, sebbene in realtà poco pratico perché spesso non vengono messe foto di quello di cui si parla, oppure non si segnala dove sono all’interno de libro. Indicazioni tecniche sono poche ma c’è una fondamentale parte di chiarimento sui termini usati: tuttavia credo sia l’unico testo italiano che chiami il midollino “canna d’India” o usi il più generico termine “giunco” per distinguerlo dai vimini. Non sono del tutto sicura che funzioni ma c’è da dire che riprende i termini usati all’epoca.

The book contains a historical introduction on woven furniture, in general (Europe and Asia) and in Italy in particular, between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. A section of about fifty color plates reproducing furniture from private collections and a section with a list of antique producers taken from archive sources and reproductions of identification plates and catalogs. In particular, the most important companies (Bonacina, Crenna, Dal Vera, Gervasoni), some of which are still active (unfortunately few) are examined in depth.

It seems to me a book perhaps not very complete but avant-garde given that it is the only one in Italy on this subject. The authors are experts in antiques and design of the twentieth century, or rather of the first part of the twentieth century, and they founded the Archives of Italian Applied Arts of the twentieth century. In reality, one of the defects of the book is that it does not deal with the second half of the century, when Italian design (also in the field of weaving) emerges worldwide. Therefore it is a bit repetitive when it reports comparisons in the various parts of the book, although in reality it is not very practical because often no photos of what is being talked about, or it is not indicated where they are inside the book. Technical indications are few but there is a fundamental part of clarification on the terms used: however I believe it is the only Italian text that calls the cane “canna d’India” (indian cane) or uses the more generic term “giunco” (rush) to distinguish it from wicker. I’m not entirely sure it works but it must be said that it takes up the terms used at the time.
