Il libro fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1933 con il titolo “Basket Pioneering” che indica la sua destinazione per ragazzi scout e dilettanti in generale. Lo dimostrano gli esempi di progetti pratici che si concentrano su progetti piccoli e domestici, più che di lavoro. Si tratta di “esplorazione” della cesteria: sia perchè vengono trattate sostanzialmente tutte le tecniche (intreccio classico, avvolgimento, cucitura, trecce…..) sia perché si fa riferimento all’uso dei più diversi materiali. Il titolo “Earth Basketry” fa riferimento al fatto che si tratta di materiali ingegnosamente reperiti dall’uomo in natura e al fatto che siano tecniche diffuse in tutta la Terra.
Di fatto è uno de più completi libri di cesteria che abbia mai letto, ma oggigiorno non è molto adatto ai dilettanti perchè è molto sintetico. Gli ottimi disegni permettono di fare un intero cesto con una sola pagina stampata da tenere sott’occhio. Ma non sono adatti a chi non ha già una buona manualità oppure è abituato ai manuali odierni (che contengono tutte le fasi della lavorazione minuziosamente fotografate a colori).
In effetti si tratta di un libro tra il pratico e lo spirituale, con spiegazioni secche, ma citazioni poetiche ad ogni capitolo e inviti a godere e sperimentare dei “doni” della natura, letteralmente dalle radici alle folgie, ai fili d’erba. Una donna, questa Osma, che mi sarebbe proprio piaciuto conoscere…

The book was first published in 1933 with the title “Basket Pioneering” which indicates its destination for young scouts and amateurs in general. The examples of practical projects that focus on small and domestic projects, rather than work ones, demonstrate this. It is an “exploration” of basketry: both because all the techniques (classic weaving, wrapping, sewing, braids …..) are dealt and because it refers to the use of the most diverse materials. The title “Earth Basketry” refers to the fact that these are materials ingeniously found by man in nature and to the fact that they are techniques spread all over the Earth.
In fact it is one of the most complete basketry books I have ever read, but nowadays it is not very suitable for amateurs because it is very synthetic. The great designs allow you to make an entire basket with just one printed page to keep an eye on. But they are not suitable for those who do not already have good dexterity or are accustomed to today’s manuals (which contain all the stages of processing meticulously photographed in color).
In fact it is a book between the practical and the spiritual, with dry explanations, but poetic citations at each chapter and invitations to enjoy and experience the “gifts” of nature, literally from the roots to the leaves, to the blades of grass. A woman, this Osma, that I would have really liked to know …
