La vannerie (Jacques Anquetil)
Un libro abbastanza interessante, sebbene di qualità discontinua, con molte ripetizioni e un pò datato (è del 1979, una parte delle foto è in bianco e nero). Si tratta del volume dedicato alla cesteria in una “Encyclopedie Contemporaine des Métiers d’art”, diretta dallo stesso autore di questo testo: Jacques Anquetil, esperto di tessitura e attivista dell’artigianato d’arte.
Innanzitutto è un saggio, non un manuale, sebbene alla fine ci sia anche un capitolo con spiegazioni (non chiarissime) sulla procedura tecnica. E’ più che altro una ricognizione storico-antropologico-geografica della cesteria.
All’inizio c’è una introduzione interessante sulla classificazione dei tipi di intreccio fatta dall’etnologa Hélène Balfet (autrice, tra l’altro della voce “Basketry” dell Encyclopedia Britannica). Cui segue un’altro tentativo di classificazione per funzione: le più curiose sono sulle funzioni di mezzi di trasporto, abitazione e abbigliamento).
Quindi veniamo a “viene prima l’uomo o la gallina?” Ossia tutto un discorso quasi filosofico su cosa è stato inventato prima (la cesteria diede origine alla ceramica e alla tessitura) e quali siano le differenze tra le tecniche affini. In effetti stuoie, corderia, fabbricazione di reti, sono non sono poi così lontane dalla tecnica dell cesteria a spirale, che sta a metà tra uncinetto e cucito e nel mondo è significativamente appannaggio delle donne.
Può sembrare una questione di lana caprina, ma a parte il fatto che serve a giustificare che nel libro non si parli delle tecniche affini, secondo me è importante anche per capire come mai la cesteria non sia così sviluppata come ad esempio la tessitura e come mai se vai un negozio di bricolage trovi pareti intere di FIMO mentre il midollino non sanno cosa sia. Ma questo è un altro discorso, a proposito del quale vedi il libro The Nature of Basketry.
Segue una panoramica della cesteria nelle varie parti del mondo, in particolar modo delle Americhe (dove è molto studiata) e ovviamente della Francia, con uno sguardo al futuro (per lo meno come lo si poteva immaginare nel ’79).
A fairly interesting book, although of discontinuous quality, with many repetitions and a bit dated (it is from 1979, a part of the photos is in black and white). This is the volume dedicated to basketry in an “Encyclopedie Contemporaine des Métiers d’art”, directed by the author of this text: Jacques Anquetil, weaving expert and art craft activist.
First of all it is an essay, not a manual, although in the end there is also a chapter with explanations (not very clear) on the technical procedure. It is more than anything else a historical-anthropological-geographical survey about basketry.
At the beginning there is an interesting introduction on the classification of the types of intertwining made by the ethnologist Hélène Balfet (author, among other things, of the entry “Basketry” of the Encyclopedia Britannica). There follows another attempt at classification by function: the most curious are the functions of means of transport, housing and clothing).
So we come to “comes first the man or the hen?” That is all an almost philosophical discourse on what was invented before (the basketry gave rise to ceramics and weaving) and what are the differences between related techniques. In fact mats, corderie, and net fabrication are not so far from the spiral basket weaving technique, which stands in the middle between crochet and sewing, and in the world is a significant prerogative of women.
It may seem like a question of goat’s wool, but apart from the fact that it serves to justify that in the book you do not talk about similar techniques, I think it’s important to understand why the basketry is not as developed as weaving and why if you go a DIY store you will find whole walls of FIMO while the rattan do not know what it is. But that’s another story, about which you see the book The Nature of Basketry.
Below is an overview of the basketry in various parts of the world, especially the Americas (where it is very studied) and of course France, with a look to the future (at least as you could imagine in ’79).
