Questo libro contiene diversi progetti artigianali legati allo stile “Shaker”, tipico dalla setta religiosa dei “Credenti nella Seconda Apparizione del Cristo” (detti appunto “shakers“) diffusasi negli USA tra il ‘700 ed il ‘900. Questo stile è stato riscoperto nel secolo scorso come esempio di semplicità e funzionalità in particolare per quanto riguarda l’ebanisteria. Tra le tecniche che ci interessano il libro tratta della cesteria, realizzata con stecche di frassino e con l’aiuto di modelli in legno, secondo una tecnica imparata dagli indiani d’America e successivamente perfezionata. Tra le tecniche “sorelle” non mancano la tessitura e l’impagliatura delle sedie. Unione di tutte queste tecniche e inventata dagli shakers è il “poplarware” che potremmo forse tradurre con “piopperia” (!). Si tratta di una sorta di tessuto/stuoia ottenuto tessendo sottili nastri di pioppo su un ordito di cotone.
Le introduzioni storiche alle varie tecniche sono interessanti e le spiegazioni sono abbastanza buone, inoltre gli artigiani autori delle varie sezioni sono esperti ma non trionfalistici. Ci sono disegni, ma le foto a colori sono poche e raggruppate in tavole al centro del tomo. Un pò sprecato visto il formato grande del libro.
This book contains several craft projects related to the “Shaker” style, typical of the religious sect of “Believers in the Second Apparition of Christ” (called “shakers“) spread in the USA between the 18th and 20th centuries. This style was rediscovered in the last century as an example of simplicity and functionality in particular with regard to cabinet making. Among the techniques that interest us, the book deals with basketry, made with black ash plint and with the help of wooden moid, according to a technique learned from the American Indians and subsequently perfected. Among the “sister” techniques there is no lack of weaving and stuffing of chairs. Union of all these techniques and invented by the shakers is the “poplarware” that we could perhaps translate as “piopperia” (!). It is a kind of fabric / mat obtained by weaving thin poplar ribbons on a cotton warp.
The historical introductions to the various techniques are interesting and the explanations are quite good, furthermore the artisans authors of the various sections are expert but not triumphalistic. There are drawings, but the color photos are few and grouped in plates in the center of the tome. A little wasted given the large format of the book.
