Raffia (Claire E. Richards)
The book is about the construction of raffia artifacts, especially hats and bags but also furnishing items. The technique is almost exclusively that of sewing braids which, as the author explains in the introduction, was traditionally used with straw (stramma was used in my country). Using raffia the work is easier and faster also because complicated braids are not proposed but the classic four-bundle one, using bundles of raffia and not single stems (in this way thick braids are obtained quickly). Also for modeling is made extensive use of shapes (those for hats are not so easily available, at least in Italy). Therefore, a very large manual skill is not necessary: it is a modern adaptation of an ancient technique, suitable for hobbyists of any age.
This can be considered an advantage or a defect according to the needs, as well as the extreme repetitiveness of the instructions (since the technique is always the same). Maybe a few more diagrams and photos of the technical steps would not have spoiled: even the braid, which is the basis of everything, is shown only the diagram of the first step …
On the other hand, I found the editorial choice of ring binding very intelligent: you risk tearing the pages if you are not careful, but in this way the book remains open to the page you have decided without problems. It is the simplest solution for the technical manuals that must be consulted with the hands full ….
