La vannerie (Documents Arts Ménagers)

C’era una volta il Salon des Arts Ménagers, una fiera di economia domestica che si teneva a Parigi tra gli anni ’20 e gli ’80. Pareva che la gestone della casa, e le teniche e tecnologie che occorrevano per farlo, non fosse considerato avvilente ma di fondamentale importanza per la donna (e la sua famiglia) oltre che foriero di sviluppo economico. Quindi il Salon pubblicava anche una rivista (Revue Arts Ménagers) e già che c’erano degli speciali monotematici. Fu così che nel giugno 1961 potè accadere qualcosa che oggi ci sogneremmo: andare in edicola e trovare una rivista dedicata interamente alla cesteria.

Ho fatto tutta questa premessa perchè questo opuscolo-rivista è più importante come testimonianza storica di un mondo romanticamente perduto, sebbene un pò maschilista. Ciò non toglie che il contenuto è fatto bene: in una cinquantina di pagine, molte delle quali a colori, vengono spiegate brevemente ma efficacemente (grazie a molte foto) le tecniche basilari e forniti semplici progetti pratici. Si tratta di midollino e si fa molto uso di armature in ferro, perchè lo scopo delle riviste di fai-da-te è, allora come oggi, anche di vendere materiali costruttivi. Cioè l’autocostruzione non è tornare alle caverne, ma un modo per sviluppare l’economia…. Che invidia allora, per un’epoca in cui midollino ed armature si potevano trovare nei negozi!

Infine, tanto per dire i giri che può fare un’informazione, è su questa rivista francese del 1961 (e non dalle altre decine di libri di cesteria in tre lingue in mio possesso) che ho visto un cesto da uova la cui foto proviene dalle collezioni del Musèe National des Traditions Populaires (non più esistente) e che mi ha ispirato il mio “Ovaiolo“….

Once upon a time there was the Salon des Arts Ménagers, a home  economics fair that was held in Paris between the 1920s and 1980s. It seemed that the manager of the house, and the techniques and technologies that were needed to do it, was not considered demeaning but of fundamental importance for the woman (and her family) as well as a harbinger of economic development. So the Salon also published a magazine (Revue Arts Ménagers) and while there were special monothematics. So it was that in June 1961 something could happen that we would dream of today: go to the newsstand and find a magazine dedicated entirely to the basket maker.

I made all this premise because this pamphlet-magazine is more important as a historical testimony of a romantically lost world, although a little male chauvinist. This does not mean that the content is done well: in about fifty pages, many of which in color, basic techniques are briefly but efficiently explained (thanks to many photos) and simple practical projects are provided. It is about rattan and a lot of use is made of iron armor, because the purpose of do-it-yourself magazines is, then as today, also to sell construction materials. That is, self-construction is not going back to the caves, but a way to develop the economy …. What envy then, for an era in which rattan and armor could be found in shops!

Finally, just to say the turns that information can make, it is in this French magazine of 1961 (and not from the other dozens of basket books in three languages ​​in my possession) that I saw an egg basket whose photo comes from collections of the Musèe National des Traditions Populaires (no longer existing) and which inspired my “Ovaiolo” …
