E’ veramente un mistero come qualcuno possa decidere di comprare questo inutilissimo libro, venduto da QVC a 25 dollari. Il riassunto è che i cesti sono bellissimi e utilissimi. Chi più di me può essere d’accordo con questa affermazione? Non sai quanto ti può essere utile finchè non ce ne hai uno, anzi più di uno e di tutte le dimensioni. E poi vuoi mettere che stile in confronto al plasticume che invade oggigiorno le nostre case? Si potrebbe pensare che non c’è bisogno di un libro per dirlo e che certamente un libro del genere è invendibile e quindi impubblicabile in Italia. Ma questo libro è pubblicato negli USA e nei paesi anglofoni i “coffee table books” (i libri illustrati carini che non servono a niente se non a far vedere che li hai comprati) hanno un loro mercato. E va bene, ve lo concedo. Ma il fatto è che questo non è un libro, è una brochure pubblicitaria in carta patinata e copertina rigida con sovraccoperta! Infatti l’80% sono foto dei cesti dell’azienda americana Peterboro, venduti dal canale di vendite televisive QVC, proprietaria della QVC Publishing (editore del libro). Tra l’altro non solo la casa editrice risulta attualmente introvabile su internet (l’avranno chiusa) sia QVC non tratta più questi cesti (li vende on-line direttamente la casa madre).
In effetti quello che mi fa più arrabbiare non è l’inutilità del libro, ma il fatto che non sono nemmeno veri e propri cesti! Sono impalcature di legno con strisce di legno inchiodate! Coi manici fatti da strisce di pelle o di legno imbullonati! Con coperchi e fondi di legno! Con intrecci che saprebbe fare anche un bambino! E l’azienda si vanta che siano fatti a mano? No, no, mi correggo, non c’è scritto da nessuna parte: c’è scritto che l’azienda risale al 1851, ma non che siano fatti a mano. I cesti cinesi sono fatti a mano e pur essendo un decimo di lavorazione di quelli di mio nonno, sono molto più complessi (e belli) di questi scatoloni americani…. Sto parlando bene dei cinesi? Bhè allora diciamo che probabilmente i giocattoloni 100% Made in Usa saranno fatti con materiali locali di qualità migliore (specie le vernici) e senza sfruttamento delle foreste e della manodopera. Ma cavoli…….
It ‘s really a mystery how anyone can decide to buy this book very useless, sold by QVC at $ 25. The summary is that the baskets are beautiful and useful. Who more than I can agree with this statement? Do not know how you can be useful as long as we do not have one, indeed more than one and of all sizes. And then you want to compare that style in comparison to plastic stuff that nowadays invades our homes? You might think that you do not need a book to tell that and certainly such a book is unmarketable and unprintable in Italy. But this book is published in the US and English-speaking countries the “coffee table books” (books illustrated nicer ones are useless if not to show that you have bought them) have their own market. All right, I grant you. But the fact is that this is not a book, it is an advertising brochure in coated paper and hardcover with dust jacket! In fact 80% are photos of the American company Peterboro baskets, sold by QVC television channel sales, owns the QVC Publishing (book publisher). Among other things, not only the publisher is currently nowhere to be found on the internet (they have closed, I think) and QVC has no longer these baskets (the company sells them directly on-line).
In fact what makes me most angry is not the futility of the book, but the fact that they are not even real baskets! They are wooden scaffolding with wooden strips nailed! With handles made from strips of leather or wood bolted! With lids and wooden bottoms! With weaves that could do even a child! And the company boasts that are handmade? No, no, I correct myself, there is not written anywhere: it says that the company dates back to 1851, but not that they are handmade. The Chinese baskets are handmade and also being a tenth of the processing of those of my grandfather, are much more complex (and beautiful) of these boxes Americans …. I’m talking good of Chinese? Well then we say that probably those big toys 100% Made in the USA will be made with local materials of better quality (especially paints) and without forest exploitation and labor. But …….
