La bibbia del midollino. Ringrazio qui ufficialmente la scuola italiana per avermi insegnato il francese, e ringrazio Ebay di esistere: tutto ciò solo per avermi fatto trovare e leggere questo libro. Semplice, accurato, completo. Si tratta di un testo la cui prima edizione risale al 1959, pubblicato in versione bilingue (tedesco e francese) dalla “Società svizzera di lavoro manuale e riforma scolastica” ed indirizzato agli insegnanti. Il testo deriva non solo dall’esperienza pratica dell’autore, ma dalla collaborazione con le maggiori istituzioni di cesteria del tempo in Europa, alcune delle quali non più esistenti (compresa quella che ha pubblicato il libro), il che rende ancora più prezioso questo volume come testimonianza storica. Personalmente ritengo che questo libro (assieme al più impegnativo Duchesne) sia quello da cui partono tutti gli altri libri di cesteria. Mi piace pensare che sia perfino passato per le mani dei cinesi, quando hanno deciso con quali modelli di cesti invadere il mondo.
Dati i fini didattici, tratta solo di midollino che è perfetto per chi impara, inoltre non sono presenti grandi cesti da lavoro ma più che altro oggetti da arredamento. E’ insomma il libro perfetto per l’hobbista di città che comunque non vuole solo passare un week-end diverso, ma coltivare la passione. Le tecniche ci sono tutte e sono spiegate in modo dettagliato con ottimi disegni professionali, inoltre è presente una ricca parte con progetti pratici che vanno dai semplci cestini a fondo in compensato, ai cesti ad arco, alla cesteria su armatura in metallo. Per farvi capire: qui ho imparato il bordo a treccia, l’anello a treccia, la base a cerchio che diventa quadrato. E altre tecniche aspettano di essere sperimentate: la croce a giorno, la base decentrata, la parete concava o convessa, il battipanni, manici ed anse di ogni tipo….
The rattan bible. Here I officially thank the Italian school for teaching me French, and I thank Ebay for existing: all this only for making me find and read this book. Simple, accurate, complete. It is a text whose first edition dates back to 1959, published in a bilingual version (German and French) by the “Swiss Society of Manual Work and School Reform” and addressed to teachers. The text derives not only from the author’s practical experience, but from the collaboration with the major basket-making institutions of the time in Europe, some of which no longer exist (including the one that published the book), which makes this even more precious volume as historical testimony. I personally believe that this book (together with the more demanding Duchesne) is the one from which all the other basketry books start. I like to think that it even went through the hands of the Chinese, when they decided which baskets to invade the world with.
Given the educational purposes, it only deals with rattan which is perfect for those who learn, also there are no large work baskets but mostly furniture items. In short, it is the perfect book for the city hobbyist who in any case not only wants to spend a different weekend, but to cultivate passion. The techniques are all there and are explained in detail with excellent professional drawings, there is also a rich part with practical projects ranging from simple baskets with plywood bottom, to arched baskets, to baskets on metal armor. To make you understand: here I learned the braided edge, the braided ring, the circle base that becomes square. And other techniques are waiting to be tested: the open cross, the decentralized base, the concave or convex wall, the beater, handles and handles of all kinds ….
